Pop Music Mise en Scène

Set Design/Location: The locations of most Pop music videos are places that tend to be showing a good time or give a good mood/vibe. This would include places like beaches, parks, hotels, clubs, shopping centres, an open top car on the motorway etc. This is done to amplify the emotion felt by the audience, enough to almost make them feel like they're there too, present and a part of all the fun or in contrast, all the pain and emotion should it be a love song about a break up. When deciding on whether or not to shoot on set or on location there are a lot of factors to consider. Shooting on location is a lot cheaper and less time consuming but you'd have to deal with more natural occurrences like day to day pedestrians or wildlife should you be out of the city. A sadder song would tend to be in a city, park or bedroom; places where the character would reminisce the past memories.

Lighting: The lighting plays a key part in the mood of the video and so much can be changed with even the slightest altering of intensity, colour, quality or direction of the light . Light is used to emphasise a mood, an object or character (highlights, shadows) or even things as simple as the time of day or season. If the music video is one of a positive pop song the lights tend to be bright, intense, and have a gentler quality/texture. Alternatively a sad pop song would have dimmer lights, only enough to brighten up the character and his surroundings to be seen, their would also be a rougher texture to the lighting representing what and how the character feels inside. With simple changes to these elements of lighting you can tell the audience what to feel.

Costume: Once again something as simple as clothing can play a big part on the reception of the audience towards the video. In pop music the characters tend to be dressed in the latest fashion and coolest trends. This way they're wearing what their audience would probably be wearing too and therefore it creates a sort of connection and closeness between the two and the audience feel they can relate more. Also clothing can relate mood, you wouldn't normally be in swimming trunks if you're heartbroken, you'd probably be dressed in long sleeves to cover up naked flesh can connote vulnerablility so by covering up they want protection and to hide that.

Makeup and Hair Styles: It's the same principle as with costume, it helps to make the audience and performer form a bond because of similarities if they follow the trends. Also like with costume their hair and makeup can strongly relate emotion and mood, if a girl has her hair all messed up and has mascara running down her cheeks she's evidently going through negative emotions.

Sound: Despite having the actual audio of the song in the video sometimes adding extra sound effects or maybe speech as little breaks between the song to help tell the story further (e.g Drake - Find your love or Green Day - Wake me up when september ends). If a police car passes through in the video for example, having a siren fading in and out as it travels by creates a realer effect, making the audience feel like the video is actually real and they are within and living this scene. This way they can relate easier, it's similar to the use of method acting, by mentally putting yourself in their state with their surroundings you'll feel their emotions.

Space: The way in which you use the space affects the reading of the video. Depth, size and proportion can be manipulated by camera placement and angles in order to create a specific mood.

Duke Dumont - I Got U - video analysis by shemsi

The music video is shot at a mans point of view, and that in the beginning, he raises his hands to put on his helmet, which transforms his life into a world which he thinks is "better than life" and that's when the music starts.
The lyrics of the video are talking about a special girl, that the artist loves and that he has nothing if she is not there, we know this because in the lyrics is says "ask me what i did with my life i spent it with you" this makes us feel happy for the artist, because he must have had a lot of fun. However the music video does not link to the lyrics because the music video does not show the girl that the lyrics are describing. This must mean that all that is missing is his girlfriend, and that world that he is in, is not perfect.

In this scene the lyrics are " ask me what i did with my life i spent it with you", as he says "i spent it with you" he looks around, this connotes that he is looking for his love, and that only that is missing.
overall the music video makes us feel happy and that we need something like this to make us happy.
In the video he is mostly topless and has shorts on because of the variety of activities he does, there are also many mid-shots of girls dancing or playing volleyball, this attracts the male gender.
In the beginning of the video Duke Dumont (playing the main character) looks outside the window and sees that its is raining, so that links to the middle and the end which there is good weather everywhere he goes.
Duke Dumont also does a variety of fun activities which makes us feel in a good mood.
In the video there is only one scene that there is band performance and that is during the middle of the video from 1:28 - 1:40.

Kiesza - Hideaway - video analysis by shemsi

From my research, the genre of the song is "deep house" and that it is a combination of jazz and soul style music.Through out the video there are bright colours in the background, getting the viewer to feel happy. The lyrics link to Kiesza's movements, which makes the video fit in with the lyrics.
One example of this is when Kiesza says the word "dreaming" she looks ahead as if she is looking at what is to come.
By the looks of it, the video is set in a middle class city, which could be in California, as she is from California, where she dances her way down a couple streets.

Within the video there are a variety of moments where there are many dancers in the background, which are all dancing to the beat.
The dance through out the video is a smooth calm dance, the steps of the dancers move in time with the drum claps.
During the video there are a few close ups of Kiesza, when she walks up to the camera, and the moves back to a mid-shot camera angle, when she then continues to follow the camera.

The artist also makes eye contact with the camera to create a link to the viewers, and get a personal feel to the video.
In her lyrics she also uses sexual noises such as when she says "ooh aah ooh aah ooh aah" which makes the audience think twice.
She also does some slow flirtatious movements for example when she dances against a wall to attract the male gender, she also starts to dance with a male dancer, making close up, eye contact between the male dancer, which causes the beat to move quicker and with more passion.
Another aspect that the artist uses to attract her target audience is by her clothing.
By what she and the female dancers are wearing, they attract the male gender.
Through the video she is met by a variety of dancers at different stages in the video, she is then met by all off them at the end of the video, where she has a final dance of where the music also gets quicker and more lively, she then calls for a taxi, and that's where the video ends.

Justin Timberlake - TKO video analysis by Drin

The music video for TKO uses both narrative and performance throughout. The narrative tells the story of a doomed relationship between the protagonist (Justin Timberlake) and his lover who eventually becomes his murderer.
The video has many different shots and camera angles of 2 different stories simultaneously which eventually come together to make sense at the end. There are quite a few mid-range shots of both characters, depicting first of all how expressionless and emotionless they are, and the lack of love. Secondly the look in their eyes is no longer one of admiration but one of searching, theres something missing from their relationship and despite getting close and intimate as well as even having sex in the video (3:56-4:50) there is nothing more to the couple. The target audience is couples and/or people in love facing a couple of issues within their relationship and are trying to get over this rough patch.  Mainly aged 20-45 because that's when most lasting relationships are made and or begin to break.
The costumes are fairly simple, and just normal everyday clothing however in some of the scenes at home the female is only in a long shirt and very short shorts or underwear which is fairly promiscuous relating back to how they're relationship has come down to just sexual.
The lighting tends to be very simple and certain scenes are pretty dim/dark, conveying the feelings within the video, the level of emotions shown, creating that sort of tense atmosphere.

Pop music conventions

After looking at numerous pop music videos a few things are evident; they are mainly performance based. Using their performance and their props/costumes they convey the emotions of their song and the story, be it about a sad heart break or the happiness of falling into new love etc. It appeals to a younger audience and the performers tend to be dressed up in the latest and coolest fashion, they are particularly mainstream.
The locations are normally places that show a good fun time or mood e.g beaches or events with friends.
