Naughty Boy - La La La ft.
Sam Smith music video analysis
This music video uses
narrative throughout the video and there is no band performance but there is
one dance performance. The representation of the main character changes
throughout the music video. He starts as being verbally abused by his father,
however he was covering his ears while it happened; he increases his power and
status by doing this and also creates sympathy.
After being verbally abused
by his father, the young boy runs out the house and he helps his friend out by
taking the dog for a walk, this shows that he is responsible like an adult. The lighting is aimed on the father. Throughout the music video there was mostly extreme wide shots of the setting.
His father starts throwing
food out the window, he runs off and he gets to a dance studio. As the dancers
started to dance the young boy covered his ears, and old man started to copy,
this shows the young boy taught the old man how to block out the song, Also
shows intelligence. In this part of the video there is close up shots.
The old man and the young
boy went out and met a scarecrow, the scarecrow walked with them, he taught the
scarecrow to cover his ears. The young boy was feeling tired so the scarecrow
carried him, this reminds the audience the real age of the boy. In this part of
the video there is mid-shots.
Also near to the end of the music video shows the affection between the young boy and older man, which is clearly shows a typical father and son relationship. The boy is dressed in very bright and colourful outfit that links to his surroundings of the country. In this part of the video there is wide-shots.
Focuses a bit too much on narrative. Think also about mise-en-scene and camera work/editing.
