Representation of people/groups in our music video
In our music video, our actor in the music video will be dressed appropriately as our target audience is aged from 13 to about 28. Appropriate dress would be dark colours, mainly black and navy because they are connected to and symbolize seriousness, darkness, depression and sadness.
The types of people we are representing and that would listen to this song are troubled teens/young adults who are sad and depressed or stressed because this is the type of music you would listen to if your stressed or depressed because of the lyrics and the tune of the song, it's not necessarily the happiest song out there. We'll attempt to capture this with a subtle narrative of someone trying and struggling to deal with their emotions after a breakup, something that happens in everyday life and we've all felt or will feel at some point. Capturing both our perception of the lyrics, the character could 'use somebody' like their other half they've broken up with as the memories are now painful, but also the mood of the song, showing what many people go through.
Intertextuality
Regarding intertextuality we looked at many videos to decide on what shots to use for the recording of the performance clips as inspiration. We decided to take shots from the front, but as close ups from the chest/shoulders and up as we felt it was best to focus on the face and the emotion for the deliverance of the lyrics. It's also similar to our song in its genre and target audience so that helped.
Also we decided to use shots without any of us in them and just of scenery like in the actual use somebody video and in many others as we felt it created a nice calming effect without much effort, and since it happens so much we consider it one of the conventions of the videos of this genre and decided to use it for that reason.

Shooting Schedule
We plan to meet up to shoot the video outdoors and at our houses in our free time at a minimum of at least once a week and all filming should be done by the end of December so we can safely make any last minute tweaks before our deadline in January.
*Update, due to circumstances we were unable to meet as much as we had initially planned. We are now filming after school when we can and on the weekends. We filmed on Wednesday 7/1/15 after school. We filmed on Saturday 11/1/15 and on Sunday 12/01/15. Our next set time to film is on Wednesday 14/1/15 after school but we may be able to before then.

List of people involved
List of people involved in the music video and their roles:
- Drin Barbatovci - Mainly acting and lip syncing in the video, some directing, camera and sound work.
- Shemsi Jashari - Camera and sound work, directing.
- Faisal Ahmed - Camera and sound work, lighting, directing input.
- Neyaz Miah - Camera and sound work, lighting, directing input.
List of locations
The places we plan to film:
- Around Camden town
- Regents place
- Regents park
- Camden Canal
- Central London
We've chosen these locations because they provide good scenery. We chose these locations because they all have different scenarios for example Camden Canal has a river that flows through a small bridge and the canal lets boats past through, Regents park has tall trees surrounding the park also we the trees contrast with sun setting , Regents place has tall buildings and busy roads and also has a lot of people walking around, Camden Town has a lot people walking around the streets and shops also Central London is where all these locations are based around. We plan to visit these locations at about 3 o'clock and on wards because the sun sets earlier in winter and we can get some aesthetically pleasing shots of all the lights up in the dark but still have enough lighting to make clear recordings without having to add more than a torch or two from behind the camera in some places.
List of props
The props we are going top use are:
- A wine bottle
The wine bottle represents the loneliness of the character as he is now lonely so he has given himself up and now he is drinking alcohol. He drinks alcohol because he wants to forget about his issues and him being lonely.
List of equipment
Equipment we'll require:
- A camera
- Torches for lighting in darker locations
- Camera stand of some sort for steadier shots
- A microphone (should be built into camera however)
- A tripod
The camera we will be using to record our footage will be at a fairly good quality. This piece of equipment will produce high definition content so will ensure that our music video appears professional and is enjoyable to watch as it will be easier on the eye. The camera has a number of modes that can be used, meaning filming can take place in the several settings and variations of lighting that we plan to film in. A tripod will also be needed as to keep the camera still whilst filming. This will ensure that the shots appear professional as opposed to the poor, handmade quality of a handheld shot. the tripod will need to be adjustable so that a variation of shot types and angles can be applied.
Editing will be done on a macbook pro with retina display on an editing programme that has many useful features that are discussed under the subheading of "editing" for this task. The computer itself
has a high definition screen with retina display, meaning the image will be crystal clear - which means that the video can be edited accurately and be aesthetically pleasing to watch.

Eminem Analysis
Eminem-Not Afraid
Cinematography
The first shot in this video is an establishing shot. This shot
tells us that he is in a city with a lot of skyscrapers so stereotypically he
may be in New York. He speaks at the start of the video and the goes to a close
up of his face whilst he speaks. This lets us establish who it is and how he
looks at the moment because he wants to show people that he is fashionable and
he keeps up with the latest fashions. He raps with a lot of emotion in this
song so there are a lot of close ups to show this emotion, with facial expression,
hand, arm gestures and movements. This shows that Eminem has a passion for
raping. Also he is at the centre of the camera at every angle, this shows that
he is the main attention.
Editing
This video is a mix between continuity and montage editing
as it follows a loose story line, in to two settings and jumps between the two
settings whilst he sings the lyrics in both settings. It also jumps between
different angles within the same setting. This creates a very effective way of explaining
his feeling in this song through editing as is talking about he is trying to
work through the chaos of his life.
Sound
The lip syncing in this video is done expertly because the
camera is very focused on him so he had to make sure his singing is exactly in
time. Around Eminem there is no one and it looks like there is no sound.
There are two settings in this video; a city and a basement.
The basement setting i used to help illustrate his feeling of being trapped
which is confirmed when he breaks through the wall when the lyrics talk about
facing his problems. He is dressed very typical for his genre which is Hip Hop
which include the cross around his neck, sleeveless tops, baggy jeans and Nike
trainers.
bruno mars grenade analysis
The music video I am analyzing
is ‘Grenade by Bruno mars. The video is a well-known narrative video, which
defies emotion and relative feeling to an audience through its visuals as well
as audio. The song is about a man ’s feelings towards a girl who means a lot to
him but she doesn’t feel the same back. In the video it is very simplistic in
the sense that minimal percentage of production was designated to post
production, meaning it had basic continuity editing where it showed the artist
in different places. The video storyline is around a connection with the
lyrics. It shows the efforts that the man would go through to prove his love
for the women. It shows him all the way through pulling a piano with a rope.
This is a dominant ideology in the video and shows the struggle, this creates
interest to the audience visually on the journey this man is embarking on. We
question as a viewer where he is going? Why he is going? And why he has a
piano? But this all adds up through the artists star persona, his musician
ability is shown through the fact he is pulling a piano which in most of his
songs he plays himself. The genre is signified through the use of mise en
scene, cinematography and editing. Also the connection within the lyrics is
very cleverly done as it swerves away from being classed as a performance video
although it contains similar characteristics. For example the lyric ‘In front
of a train for ya’ then ironically at the end of the video after witnessing the
girl he loves with another man, he ends up committing suicide and standing in front
of a train. The emotion of the song is complimented through the visuals, which
in all creates suspense and interest to the video.
Editing
As I earlier mentioned the
editing used in the video is very simplistic.
This is a skill in itself
as it highlights the naturalistic feel to the video/song. A montage edit is
used throughout the video; we follow two scenarios of the same man, 1 of him
pulling a piano on a journey somewhere, another of him in a room reminiscing
looking at photos etc.
The variety used within the
edit maintains the viewers interest as we are not always looking at the same
things it is constantly changing.
The effect the edit has on
us as an audience is that we are always occupied and being informed. The effect
is has on the video is that the level of interest is sustained throughout. The
duration of the clips are not too long to become repetitive of lack interest
and not too short to change the genre/feel of the video.
Interesting transitions to
represent change in scenario are used for example, when he is in the room
before the first chorus a swipe is used in the form of a truck which goes
across the screen fast and the shot then changes into him in a car tunnel still
pulling the piano. This unique transition is used rarely within the video but
seeing it is aesthetically pleasing to the audience and they continue watching
to see it again.
The mise en scene within
the video has essentially affected how the
Genre is put across; the
artist, and the videos intended meaning by applying the appropriate colors and
props, costumes etc. The audience has a preferred response to the video
understanding the true emotion being emitted. The uses and gratifications
theory can be applied to the video as the fact he is in a suit allows a range
of people being able to identify and relate to the character through his
costume. It adds connotations of a smart, normal, workingman, which in itself
emphasizes the natural meaning behind the song of love.
A dark color filter has
been applied to a majority of the video, to engage the depressing, emotional
feel that the genre represents. These specific songs require signifiers to
ensure the audience of the genre and style of the artists video/song. Production
design was vitally important in this video as it showed the character going
through scenarios such as rough neighborhoods interlinking gang culture and
violence, adding to the appeal it has to an
Audience.
Sound
As it is a music video the
sound itself was the song throughout but Miniscule sound effects were used for
example in transition of shots as a truck passed, in the background a truck
engine would play. Also in the end of the video as the train approaches the
character the sound of an oncoming train plays. Through various viewings of the
music video I have not picked up on any Intersexuality use within it.
Theories
Andrew Goodwin’s theory can
be applied to this video as it demonstrates genre characteristics for example,
close ups, mise en scene specific factors etc. As well as there is a
distinctive relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, amplifying what is
going on. In the video the artist Bruno Mars plays the role of the main
character, which includes a lot of focus on him via cinematography. This
promoted the artist himself and could even be a demand by him or the record
label to gain the most profit possible. The uses and gratifications theory is applies
in how the video allows the audience to identify and relate with the content of
the video through the visuals and the lyrics. This attracts a more varies and
range audience as the relation for the audience to the song depends on personal
past experience.
Avicii Wake me up
neyaz
Avicii- Wake me up
This establishing
shot sets the scene of the video. It creates an olden time effect as it’s in
the country side and the colour effect of this first shot also helps to create
this olden atmosphere to the video throughout the music video.
This second shot
also helps to set the scene as it tells the audience a bit about the place in
which the two girls in the movie are living in and the financial state they are
in as well. It placed in the countryside and away from society.
This shot is a
medium shot of the two girls in bed. They are both in white which gives the
impression of their innocence vunerability in this video. As the main lyric to
this video is ‘Wake me up’ it reinforces this idea of waking up.
This is a
background media close up of the two girls tattoos. This is enforcing the girls
tattoo and that it has a special meaning within this music video. It adds to
the mystery of the video and we are ensure of the meaning of it.
This shot is a medium
shot of the two girls holding each others hands. The older girl is protecting
her sister from the weird people who all seem to be wearing old clothes and
looking scruffy whereas the girls are nicely dressed. It shows that possibly
there Is a higher class from the girls.
This last shot is
completely different to any of the other shots and shows a completely different
era and place that the girls are in. The oldest girl goes to find a better
place for them to live where they belong. All the people in this new place are
shown to have the same tattoo which shows a sign of community.
There is lot of bright colours and it is a
busy shot. This makes the audience fill with excitement from the music video.
